So this was a trip we weren’t planning take, at least not just yet. A family emergency meant we had to get to Amman as fast as possible, so that meant getting everything we needed in a couple of days for our first overseas trip.
The one thing that made it possible for us to go as a family, instead of just me, was that we had applied for Zayn’s passport a few months earlier. And luckily it came within a couple of weeks so we didn’t have to add getting that to our list of things to do, and delay Shilpi, and Zayn coming with me on the trip.
So first thing was first. Getting a car seat for the flight. One that’s lightweight. and can strap onto a suitcase (as you can see in the picture above), because let me tell you, lugging around one that’s heavy through an airport and the aisles of a flight, is not something you will want to do. It was enough to get our super lightweight one around the terminal and boarding. We went this Evenflo seat that we wound up using time and time again. And to strap it to the luggage, you’ve got plenty of options, but we went with the following.
So for safety reasons, we wanted the seat facing backwards in the plane. It may seem like overkill since its a plane and not a car ride, but why take risks, or have someone’s seat reclining all the way back into your baby’s face. The flight attendants didn’t want to allow us to strap the seat in this way. That is, until Shilpi pulled up the following TSA regulation on her phone (before we lost connection with the outside world). It basically says you have the right to use your car seat in accordance with the way it is intended to be used by the manufacturer (as long as you’re in am airplane seat that is facing forward. And then, as this page and the videos in it show, you can get your kid’s car seat in rear-facing.
Once all that was set, we got extremely lucky, as our little one slept the entire flight over to Amman. He dozed like a true champ. Me, on the other hand, that was a different story, as my usual flying anxiety was still there in full force. And to make sure I could help out with the baby, when was needed, I had to forgo the doctor prescribed meds to chill me out. So while I was nervous, I was good and wide awake.
